Why are diamonds so special? The reasons are in geology, history,
myth and emotion.
First, diamonds are an extraordinarily rare phenomenon. They were
formed over a billion years ago under immense heat and pressure
deep below the earth's surface. Later, volcanic explosions forced
them upward to the surface. Since Mother Nature never repeats herself,
each diamond is distinctly unique.
The modern mining industry began with discoveries in South Africa
in 1871.
The top diamond-producing countries are South Africa, Botswana,
Angola, Namibia, Zaire, Australia and Russia. Approximately 20 tons
of ore must be mined and processed in order to produce a single
one-carat gem-quality diamond.
Diamonds are cut and polished into sparkling gemstones in many countries,
but the major cutting centers are in South Africa, Israel and Belgium.
Each and every Mervis diamond you see is the brilliant result of
our master diamond cutters' skill.
